Wind Before the Spring - Getting Ready for a New Season

March came in like a lion, as the old saying goes, much to the delight of windsurfers and heavy weather sailors.   Storm Doris at the end of February brought gusts of nearly 60 mph to the Harp, fortunately with no more damage than a few overturned boats

The Welsh Harp clubs have just enjoyed another busy weekend at the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show at Ally Pally.   As well as a busy GP14 stand and lots of sales/sails from club members for Exe Sails an unexpected Treasurer was the Duke of Edinburgh's beautiful 60 year old Flying 15 dinghy 'Coweslip' and, a surprise for many visitors, its baby sister the Flying 10, winner of the show Concours d'Elegance.

Dinghy Racing

From Steve Cooper: February’s racing began with a gentle sail in a very light South Westerly. A chilly NNE the following week, with some shifts courtesy of the new tower block at West Hendon. On the 18th a light breeze from the SW, and at last on the 24th it was windy, a lovely long beat to no 2. So, we’ve had some decent beats, spent more time on Port tack upwind, Starboard downwind, a little hiking, lots of roll tacking and the cakes have been very nice.

Light breeze - no kites!

Each race in both fleets has been won by a different helm which reflects the improvements made in what are mostly new Helm/Crew partnerships. There are more Lasers on the water this month and Michal and Micha are separated by very little in the series. The racing has been keen throughout the fleets and it’s good to see 20 plus boats on the water every week.

Talking of rising stars, congratulations to Szimon Matyjaszczuk and Ed Coyne on being selected for the Howard Davies GP14 Training Week in April, where up and coming GP14 youth sailors benefit from top quality coaching. It's at the prestigious Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, home to Olympic sailing in 2012

To kick start the season there is a 'Fun Race' on Saturday 18th March. Please by ready on beach by 10 am for kit preparation and race briefing. Racing is open to all checked out windsurfers who are current club members.

A week later there's 'Windsurfers - Get Back on the Water!' on Sunday 26th March. The Windsurfing Team are hosting an afternoon group water and social session. Members of the team will be available on the water for help and guidance. It will be a great opportunity to refresh your skills after the winter months and get ready for the new season.

***Stop Press*** Martyn and Maria applied for a Sport England grant in January to purchase new windsurf equipment to support our Start Racing project. The GOOD NEWS..  We have this week been awarded £9,600 to purchase a number of Starboard Rio medium boards and Severne Convert sail rigs, so we will have a set of matched equipment to make the racing as equal as possible.
