2017 Tuesday Commodores Cup     Wind 12 -14 MPH Easterly 12 GPs, 4 lasers.

A small ,quality fleet contested the 2017 commodores cup. With three races to complete Dennis and Craig set a short course, upwind to 3 across to 4 then downwind into the mid-summer sunset to round two, then on to one.    The short legs kept the fleet compact and the racing competitive.

There is less contemplation of the wind and water over the dam wall on a Tuesday evening, the fleet musters as people arrive from work and you know who you are sailing against when the prep flag goes up.   The Commodore had invited Alain into his boat allowing Szymon to rest his injured shoulder and cook the burgers.  With Majiek in the front of the boat and Alain in charge of steering the stakes had been raised for the regular Tuesday combos.

What followed was an excellent evenings racing. Keith and Hannah prevailed in race 1 after an epic battle which saw them start well by avoiding the crowd at the committee boat. They protected their lead upwind with some vigorous tacking to stay in front of Alain and Maciek only to lose out consistently on the reaches.   With a short beat to the finish after rounding one in the lead, Alain stayed on, intending to finish near the pin, he failed to cover a tack from Keith and all the hard work was undone.

In races 2 and 3 Alain picked the right shifts to reach the windward mark first, the angle on the short leg to the next mark made it very difficult to sail away from the fleet, with following boats blanketing those in front.  The lead boat inevitably had close company on the long reach to 2, pushing higher to protect wind gave opportunities for those further behind to take a lower faster route, there was always a threat from someone at the marks.  Each boat started the final beat with the possibility of improving their position, Steve, Scooter, Keith, Richard Lord were all pressing.   Alain and Maciek stayed ahead to take the event with two firsts. A comfortable victory on paper but they were racing to the end and I doubt even the OOD had much time to consider the sunset.

Apologies to the lasers for lack of coverage, the results indicate that Muffin and Micha had a close contest the lead exchanging throughout particularly in races 1 and 2.  Muffin’s was first overall winning two races.

The Pimms and Burgers went down a treat.  Thanks to everyone that helped.   Steve.C
